The Chicago rap scene has undergone a creative renaissance in the past few years, and Mick Jenkins is the latest auteur to emerge to the forefront. First emerged in 2012, deeply embedded within the hip-hop scene, the 25-year-old, born Jayson Jenkins has wrestled with what this sudden success means. His art has been in many ways about seeking truth in a system designed to obscure it, as an uncompromising, conscientious moralist unafraid to cut through the noise.
His debut full-length album, “The Healing Component,” which comes out today, shows an older, wiser Jenkins exploring themes of love and forgiveness in a similar vein. Throughout his work, truth is a recurring theme, Mick has an experienced voice that spits incredibly honest lyrics, and maintains a wide range of capabilities live and in the studio. This is a record about self-reflection and criticism and growth. Jenkins shows unerring confidence in the execution of the album itself, but backtracks at a near-constant rate within the content.
